This was an interesting article. I have a related question not covered here.
A close friend of mine has insisted vigorously over the years that the gange causes a wide array of physical issues and likes to point out that high blood pressure is one (can't remember the various claims made over the years, but this one in particular was repeated over and over). I believe that has more to do with the individual than the herb, but was just curious if you have a perspective or research in this direction?

High BP might come from holding his breath so long....you know to get a better high...tell him to just smoke it like a cigarette and stay away from fast food.

According to the NAS, the effects of marijuana on blood pressure are complex, depending on dose, administration, and posture.(7) Marijuana often produces a temporary, moderate increase in blood pressure immediately after ingestion; however, heavy chronic doses may slightly depress blood pressure instead. One common reaction is to cause decreased blood pressure while standing and increased blood pressure while lying down, causing people to faint if they stand up too quickly. There is no evidence that pot use causes persisting hypertension or heart disease; some users even claim that it helps them control hypertension by reducing stress.

One thing THC does do is to increase pulse rates for about an hour. This is not generally harmful, since exercise does the same thing, but it may cause problems to people with pre-existing heart disease. Chronic users may develop a tolerance to this and other cardiovascular reactions.

I'm not sure on that one, but I don know that some people are affected differently. I have a friend that is allergic to it, it makes him sick. I think it's just a person by person basis, but I'm not expert for sure.

I've never met a pot smoker that wasn't stupid and lazy. I see your article didn't address either of those little problems with pot and those that partake.

I really believe that smoking pot turns people into professional slackers. Why learn a trade to get a job that they don't want to do......pass the doobie please. If they have a trade they do like it tends to keep them focused on that and possibly ONLY that. Disfunction comes with over use of anything from coffee to heroin. Catching a morning buzz so they can ignore reality is only a symptom not a disease.

Thats an interesting observation. I know many pot smokers who are well educated, high paid professionals. Doctors, lawyers, engineers and so on, but maybe it depends on who you hang out with. Also most professionals who smoke pot don't share that information with just anyone.

I work with several people who smoke, and they are not lazy or stupid. Matter of fact, they happen to be Engineers, so.... Maybe you just need to move to a better location?

The idea that all marijuana smokers are lazy and stupid is a myth. Claims that marijuana kills brain cells are mainly based on a study that attempted to show that marijuana smoking damaged brain structures in monkeys. However, the study was poorly performed and it was severely criticized by a medical review board. Studies done afterwards failed to show any brain damage, in fact a very recent study on Rhesus monkeys used technology so sensitive that scientists could actually see the effect of learning on brain cells, and it found no damage. The truth is, no study has ever demonstrated cellular damage, stupidity, mental impairment, or insanity brought on specifically by marijuana use -- even heavy marijuana use.

What studies have shown is that the average marijuana user is actually more educated and earns a higher income than the average non-user.

Marijuana users include people in all levels of society, many with a postsecondary education. Most users with successful careers have to hide their marijuana use, so they are not associated with the drug by non-users and prohibitionists. So, while you may know a lot of people who are lazy, stupid and who also smoke pot, there is no evidence their condition can be attributed to the use of marijuana.

I'm sorry, but that is absolutely ludicrous! How do I know? My education level, my friends and associates. The only stupid and lazy people I know are waste about friends of my kid who smoke pot. Education level? High school SOME OF THEM. GED some of them...Drop outs, MOST OF THEM.

Ha! I'm sorry. I'm going to have to decline this kind offer to fight. It matters to you. It doesn't effect me one way or another. I'm having a hard time getting my blood pressure up about it.

Have a good one guys! If you got it, smoke it...

Further, I wish they'd legalize the stuff. It would be more controlled and the state would make tax revenue from it.

You've not met enough of them then. Because that's an entirely false statement. I know plenty of hard workers that are stoned while they work, and do a damn good job.

In other words, you are speaking from your experience just as I am speaking from mine. You have apparently discounted contributing factors such as heredity, environment and poor parenting skills and the part they played in forming these friends of your son. In any case, I would certainly encourage him to find a different type of friend. As far as your friends and associates are concerned, those who know your prejudice against the use of marijuana would very likely not be forthcoming with a confession about their own use, so that is not a valid argument.

Exactly...popular misconceptions and media cause these beliefs...when you get down to it, its all about the individual.

If you are not a bum, weed will not turn you into a bum. It depends on who you hang with. If you are around bums who smoke, that's all you know. On the other hand, if you are around successful people who smoke, that's all you know.

I know bums who smoke, I know successful people who smoke. You can't just assume that the handful of bums you know that smoke weed are indicative of the greater weed smoking population.

Most pot smokers mix alcohol to get a higher blast. When this wears off and is no longer hitting home they move on to meth and other toxic drugs. Pot is just the entry level drug leading to mainliners.

Perhaps alcohol is the entry level drug.

I agree, DBM, alcohol is the entry level drug. Marijuana is not physically addictive; alcohol is. Marijuana does not lead to aggressive behavior; alcohol does. Marijuana doesn't kill; alcohol does. While some people with addictive personality disorder may use marijuana and other drugs, alcohol (or nicotine, another physically addictive substance) is generally the first drug used.

Along with which, most people who try alcohol or marijuana don't try anything else.

Actually, the biggest issue with marijuana is that it introduces the user to the criminal world. you have to be a criminal to use it, and you have to interact with dealers to get it, meaning that you are now experienced in crime. If marijuana was controlled rather than illegal then users would not have this step, which makes it easier to get "harder" drugs if they choose to.
